Our Second Year in Business

Hold up!  Now, just wait a gosh darned minute…

Wasn’t it only a few short months ago that I wrote our 1 Year in Biz post?

Has it really been two years since my love and I embraced this scary but oh-so-exciting chance to follow our dreams and find out what we’re really made of?

It simultaneously seems like an eternity and no time at all. It’s been one wild ride! And it feels so good to write a commemorative blog post for a milestone we were never sure we’d see.

Care to join us for a celebratory stroll down Memory Lane, beautiful? Our second year in business was quite a year…

Created & Launched Sexy Sobriety

If you’ve read my 100 Days Without a Drink series, you’ll know that sobriety was a huge lifestyle change and challenge for me.

Six months into my sobriety, I knew I wanted to create a program that would help other women through those first challenging few months. But not just any program. Oh, no. I had BIG plans for this baby!

I felt deeply inspired to create the website and resource I wished I’d had during the first 90 days. I wanted to include 90 membership levels and daily activities. I imagined featuring more than 40 video interviews with kick-ass babes who wouldn’t be where they are now if they hadn’t ditched the drink. Elixir and raw dessert recipes to tease the tastebuds and keep their mouths deliciously occupied. Stories, journals and inspiration for deep reflection and getting their heads straight. Live coaching call webinars. Plus a treasure trove of additional content.

It was ambitious, to say the least. While Dom set about creating the membership site and graphics, I took a break from 1:1 coaching to create the content. We invested in a professional lighting kit for the videos, and a microphone for the audio pep talks. We scheduled the interviews. We created brand new Sexy Sobriety Facebook and Instagram pages. We launched our first affiliate program to support others in sharing our message of wellness and empowerment.

Three months later, we were ready to launch. And the feedback we receive from our gorgeous members confirms that it was one of the best decisions – and most beautiful projects – we’ve ever made.

Expanded Mod By Dom

In our first year of business, Dom really found his stride with gorgeous graphic design. With a degree in Computer Science, it was only a matter of time before he wove his design talents together with his mad coding skills.

This year, he created a heap of beautiful new websites, including this one, plus Sexy Sobriety, and the swoon-worthy Body Stewardship.

Mod By Dom continues to grow and thrive more than we ever could have imagined, thanks to referral after referral, and for that we feel so incredibly grateful.

Attended Exciting Events

We were tickled pink to be invited to meet Joe Cross at the Perth premiere of his film, ‘Fat Sick & Nearly Dead 2’. And to receive tickets to the Perth premiere of ‘Thriller the Musical’.

Because, fun.

Most thrilling of all was receiving an invitation from Google, to attend “the first ever gathering of Australia’s top health and fitness industry leaders at Google HQ in Sydney” – a workshop on how to effectively grow and sustain a YouTube audience over the long term.

Geeks that we are, this trip was up there as one of the highlights of our entrepreneurial journey so far. I’m still grinning so hard my head hurts, and I feel so incredibly blessed to do the work that we do – and to receive a little extra help to spread the message of wellness and empowerment.

I was also deeply honoured to be invited to be a guest speaker at the very first Perth Vegan Festival this December.  {Perthies, I hope to see you there!}

Invested in Further Education

I completed B-School again this year (my 3rd) as I led my gorgeous Masterminders through the program. I also dived into these beauties:

• Hilary Rushford’s Instagram with Intention eCourse helped me take our Sexy Sobriety Instagram community from zero to almost 3000 beautiful souls, in just a few short months.
• Gina Devee’s Live & Luxurious eCourse taught me how to better serve my clients, and to step into the true value of coaching.
• Denise Duffield-Thomas’ Manifesting Masterclass eCourse inspired me to reach for, and have clarity around, my dreams.
• Leonie Dawson’s Create Your Shining Year Workbook helped me to get super clear on my goals and intentions.
• Vanessa-Jean Boscarello Ovens’ Essential Oils 2-day training event showed me how to use aromatic anchoring to deepen my work with my beautiful clients.

And I read 5 million books! (Or at least, it felt that way).

Dom bought me a Kindle for my birthday and I’m probably far too attached to that thing! Each time I saved an Amazon receipt into our Bookkeeper’s Dropbox folder, I imagined her laughing: ‘There she goes again!’.

These were some of my favourites:

Writing Down Your Soul: How to Activate and Listen to the Extraordinary Voice Within, Janet Conner.
• Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway, Susan Jeffers.
• E-Squared, Pam Grout.
Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill.
Lucky Bitch: A Guide for Exceptional Women to Create Outrageous Success, Denise Duffield-Thomas.
Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Happier Life, Arianna Huffington.
Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook: How to Tell Your Story in a Noisy Social World, Gary Vaynerchuk.

{I’m also on GoodReads now! Come say hello. :) }

Fell More in Love with IIN

I’m not shy about sharing that IIN changed my life. This year, IIN awarded me Gold Ambassador status for encouraging so many aspiring Health Coaches to follow their dreams and enrol in the school (click here to contact me to find out what this means for you in terms of Ambassador tuition savings offers, gorgeous!).

Even more exciting was being contracted by IIN to provide 240 hours of business mentoring to 80 of their Australian students. Every single week, it lit my heart on fire to hear the enthusiasm and passion these guys had for their studies and their unfolding adventures. So blessed.

Established Masterminds & Partnerships

I had a ton of fun collaborating with some of my online heroes, including Hilary Rushford, Denise Duffield-Thomas, Leonie Dawson, and Marie Forleo.

My absolute favourite highlight was running an 8-week long B-School Mastermind program for Health Coaches. I adored sharing my best tips and supporting these angels to create the businesses of their dreams. So much so that it led to a new business direction…

Launched Business Mentoring

Back when I started the Vegan Sparkles blog (in late 2011), I never imagined the journey it would take me on. It was all just a bit of fun – a creative outlet, and a way to share what I was learning about veganism.

I never dreamt that it would lead to me enrolling to study as a Health Coach, or resigning from my long-term corporate career. Or that I would find the courage to launch my own business, and go on to coach more than 280 women worldwide!

As I progressed in my business, more and more Coaches came to me with questions about business, branding and marketing. They had big dreams of their own and wanted advice and mentoring to help them on this crazy-wonderful entrepreneurial journey. As I moved swiftly and increasingly into this beautiful mentoring role (and loved every second of talking business), we launched BexWeller.com.

My 3 Month Private Intensive Coaching Program is now my absolute favourite (and most popular) way to work with clients.

Shared the Love

I’m so incredibly grateful and honoured to have been featured in a ton of exciting online and print publications this year, including being named in The West Australian Business Section as one of Perth’s 10 Key Influencers.

I made my iTunes debut when I was interviewed by the Green is the New Black and She Makes Magic Podcasts. Crazy Courage, The Tasty Life and Intuition Nutrition TV kindly invited me to be part of their incredible Global Telesummit events.

The Channel 9 News team came over to film me in a segment about Nut Milks (to my knowledge, this still hasn’t aired, so my guess is it’s also my first time featured on the cutting room floor. Maybe next time, kid. ;) )

My Sexy Sobriety story was published in Elle Quebec Magazine’s March Issue (pinch me!), The Australian & News.com.au, Good Health Magazine’s January issue, and the cover story of Fashion Magazine’s March ‘Power’ Issue.

One of my recipes was published in a real, live cookbook when my gorgeous friend Annie invited me to contribute to her new book. I shared my vegan story in Vegan Health & Fitness Magazine USA’s Sep/Oct Issue, was invited to feature a recipe in the SBS Food Farmacy Vegan series, and my guest articles on MindBodyGreen and One Green Planet have been shared more than 60,000 times!  Mind-blowing.

Learnt More Big Lessons

Our biggest lessons this year?

::  Work-life balance is just as tricky in your second year of business as it is in your first.
Schedule time for self-care and make it non-negotiable. Establish clear boundaries (and stick to them). Entrepreneurship is a marathon, baby! Prime yourself for the long-term. The healthier and happier you are, the more energy you’ll have to give back to your clients and business.

::  Create systems and processes ASAP.
Get savvy, ladylove! Plan 90 days ahead, batch similar tasks, and draw up process flows so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel every time. Commit to working smarter, not harder.

::  Comparison-itis, Fear and Overwhelm keep you stuck.
And they’re not going anywhere, hon, so learn to outsmart them. Limit your time on social media. Unsubscribe from newsletters that aren’t super helpful or joyful to you. Limit your To-Do list to 3 (or less) items per day. YOU know you do your best work, and are at your most creative, when you feel empowered. Follow your bliss, beauty.

::  Celebrate ALL the milestones!
Even the tiny ones. Gift yourself fun rewards as you go. From the trenches, it can be really hard to recognise your achievements. Keep notes and journals, so you can look back in wonder at how far you’ve come.

::  Never give up!
If you have a dream to run your own business, chase it down, beautiful. Follow your heart and show up every single day to do the work. It won’t always be easy, glamorous or exciting (most days will be far from it), but it might just be the most rewarding, humbling and fulfilling endeavour you ever undertake.

A leap of faith like this pushes you to grow in ways you could never have imagined. We’re constantly learning, giving, and discovering more about business, ourselves, and relationships (in addition to the internal growth required to live and work with your partner 24/7, ha!).

There have been tears of frustration and tears of overwhelming joy. It’s been all-at-once confronting, maddening, thrilling, and awe-inspiring.

From our hearts to yours, THANK YOU for joining us on this crazy life journey. We wish you all the health, happiness and success in the world, gorgeous. We love you and can’t wait to see where this adventure takes us all next. xx
